Eighteen middle and high schoolers from the Bronx, Manhattan and Brooklyn told POLITICO that despite the frenzy among political leaders and in the media, there’s virtually no discussion of the issue in schools, aside from a few posters that are often torn down. In the meantime, vaping companies are reaching kids where they live, on social media platforms such as Instagram and Snapchat.
Samantha said some of the bathrooms in her school are known as the “vaping bathrooms,” which non-users tend to avoid. Several teenagers interviewed by POLITICO said their younger siblings avoid using the bathroom in school altogether because they are uncomfortable walking in on their peers vaping and fear pressure to try it.
Nikki, a 15-year-old sophomore at Beacon High School in Manhattan, said she sees third parties selling THC-infused food and vaping-related products on Instagram and often sending direct messages to kids to market the products.Kids are also agreeing to meet up with sellers in person to pick up the product, Nikki added.
