The 5,000-ton barge came loose from its English Bay mooring and drifted east toward the Burrard Bridge on the morning of Nov. 15, 2021, during an extraordinary high tide and series of storms that pounded the southwest coast of B.C. and led to catastrophic flooding events — particular in Abbotsford’s Sumas Prairie — and road damage.Article contentSubmitted

The Vancouver park board erected a sign in front of the barge that read “Barge Chilling Beach” as part of its management of the situation. This was a nod to Mount Pleasant’s Guelph Park, which is also known as Dude Chilling Park.
