The discovery angered wildlife advocates, who argued the city needed a new strategy to allow coyotes to coexist with humans.
The city said its current wildlife strategy was developed a decade ago in response to human-wildlife conflict in rural parts of the Ottawa. The strategy hasn’t been updated since council approved it in late 2013. Wildlife advocates argue that lethal methods such as trapping only create a void in the ecosystem for more coyotes to move in. People also have to change their behaviour when it covers to garbage and allowing pets off-leash.“You can’t focus on one particular species. You have to look at wildlife on an ecosystem basis.”
