After the discovery of unmarked graves at former residential school sites in 2021, council directed that it receive yearly updates on how work on White Goose Flying’s calls to action are progressing.Terry Poucette, team lead for the city’s Indigenous relations office, said work continues to move forward on tasks such as a permanent Indian Residential School Memorial and the creation of an Indigenous gathering place.
However, other action items received the lowest ranking of limited progress, including improving educational and employment gaps, and celebrating Indigenous athletics history. It was recommended that council work towards holding an annual meeting with a focus on Indigenous matters every September. Council heard the month of the meeting would be significant, as it coincides with Indigenous Awareness Month.Article content
