to homes. The bins are meant to collect food scraps, paper, and yard waste and other organic material. But are you using yours?Kevin Gunning and his family have been recycling food scraps, paper, and yard waste for compost for years. We went to their home in Rancho Penasquitos and they showed us their smooth system. “Don’t go buy new stuff, just take something that fits in it like the little plastic bags you get with your produce. This one I have in now is an old bread bag," Gunning said.
The city picks up the green bins every week along with the weekly trash pickup. The city says to take it to the curb no matter how full so food is not sitting in a green bin longer than a week. “If you don’t put food in your green bin where’s it going to go? In our black bin. You’re going to get flies in the summer either way,” Gunning said. He added they have no more bugs than they had before they started recycling food scraps. Gunning says it really is just a behavior shift.
