South admitted it’s “unlikely” the city will hit its 2023 target for its operations, but said there are still reasons for optimism in the long term; she suggested she’s confident upcoming measures will help, and pointed out that measures such as switching to LED street lights have shown that city policy can be effective.Article content
Trevor Bell, director of Saskatoon Light and Power, said planners believe solar presents the best “bang for buck” in the near term for moving off fossil fuel-generated electricity. He said adding large-scale energy storage effectively doubles the cost of a solar project, so isn’t being considered for nearer-term projects, but rather as part of the city’s longer term plans.
