Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Doncic limps off the court after injuring his lower left leg alongside Casey Smith, director of player health and performance , during the third quarter of a game at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Sunday, April 10, 2022.I suppose we should give Owner Mark Cuban credit for not interfering with his head coach, even though he sits just a few feet away on the baseline.
The Mavs’ game with San Antonio was not without meaning Sunday night, at least not initially. A win coupled with a Golden State loss would elevate Dallas to the No. 3 seed. It is arguable whether Denver is really a softer first-round opponent than Utah — hard to make that claim when the Nuggets have the reigning and most likely repeat MVP in Nikola Jokic — but a 3 seed would allow the winner to avoid Phoenix until the conference finals.
“We weren’t playing the New Orleans game, we were just trying to get better,” Kidd said afterward. “We’ve got to learn how to win. We haven’t accomplished anything yet.” The loss of Doncic could clearly alter their chances of advancing beyond the first round for the first time in 11 years. Keep in mind that Doncic was ineligible to suit up against the Spurs after receiving his 16th technical foul of the season Friday against Portland. It’s the worst favor the NBA ever did for Dallas.
