Joe Heinz, former Sweetwater District A.D., started in 2019 and then COVID upended everything
When Joe Heinz was named the CIF-San Diego Section commissioner in 2019, there was no way he could have foreseen the problems lurking right around the corner.The former athletic director for the Sweetwater Union High School District was just starting to learn the ropes from former commissioner Jerry Schniepp when COVID-19 hit.
“People wanted to go back to championships,” Heinz said. “We weren’t able to move back to college and university sites for sports like football. Having colleges and university for football and basketball meant more revenue but also, more expenses.” When Heinz looks ahead, he, like so many others, is hoping the section can utilize San Diego State’s Snapdragon Stadium for at least one of the football playoffs, possibly more.
With state regionals in baseball and softball the last two years, Heinz was asked if there might not be state playoffs soon in those two sports.
