Residents of the Western suburbs will once again be able to get an authentic German Christmas shopping experience while still staying local.
The Christkind is namesake of Christkindlmarkets and a mascot of Chicago’s annual Christkindlmarket. An Aurora location debuts Nov. 18 at RiverEdge Park.
There was a market in Oak Brook in 2007-08 and 2014-15 and at the Naper Settlement in Naperville from 2016-18. A Wrigleyville location opened in 2017. “For us, it’s what we do for a living. We run concerts all year long outside; we’ve got shows and concerts inside,” he said. “It’s the perfect storm.” The namesake and hallmark of Christkindlmarkets is the Christkind, the blonde-haired, fairylike queen. In some regions of Germany, she’s like their version of Santa Claus, she said.The most famous Christkindlmarket in the world is in Nuremburg, Germany, and the Chicago-area markets are modeled after that with red-and-white striped roofs on the vendor huts, she said.
“Some of the bigger ones of those are Käthe Wohlfahrt — they are probably the most famous maker of holiday items. They’re one of the most popular vendors at all of our markets,” she said.Smaller, fan-favorite vendors will also be on hand; like personalized ornament vendor SaraBoo Creek and Bob’s Belgian Hot Chocolate.
