Who are these idiotic talking points for except the most die\u002Dhard and braindead of partisans?
It went on like that. It was only somewhat more insulting than your average question period fare, but several Conservative MPs reportedly complained to the prime minister’s office that 20-something backroom strategists were making them and their government look like idiots. Calandra eventually apologized to the House for his disrespect, and his accompanying tears made him seem genuinely contrite.
“We’ve heard it for decades in this place,” Calandra lamented. “If you’re an Italian and you’re building homes for the people of the province of Ontario, somehow you can’t be doing it ethically. These are people who came to this country with nothing. They came here to build a better future for their families. The home that lives in was built by an Italian. The street that she drove on to get here was built by an Italian.
I don’t think I imagined a hint of “look how ridiculous this is” snark in the generally Liberal-friendly Toronto Star’s: “Justin Trudeau blames racism for allegation that China helped Liberal MP get elected.” Indeed, the look of false bravado on the prime minister’s face as he massacred various straw men at his Monday press conference suggested even he wasn’t even buying it himself.
