As spring weather takes hold, many a Calgarian’s thoughts tend to turn westward towards the lakes of B.C.’s interior. Albertans often claim Kelowna and the…
xRauDZ restaurant in Kelowna. Courtesy tourismkelowna.com – RauDZ and David McIlvrideNixon’s new properties join relatively new spots from two other groups. Coccaro is a second-generation-run company from the family behind the veteran La Bussola restaurant and Curious Cafe pizzeria. Its latest is Gather, a mash-up of Korean dishes served alongside modernized versions of the Italian fare that Coccaro built its business on.
What unites these restaurant groups is a commitment to offering the best of the Okanagan, be it locally grown food or regional wine, beer, and spirits. Food and drink lovers can pursue that bounty more deeply with an e-bike tour with Lakeside Eco-sports, a new rental company that started offering bike tours this year, initially with snow e-bikes fit with a ski in place of the front wheel.
For a more hardcore food experience, adventurous eaters can book a foraging tour with Scott Moran of Everything Wild, who provides wild mushrooms and nettles to local chefs and also sells his wares at the Kelowna Farmers and Crafters Market on Saturdays throughout the spring, summer, and fall. The fertile land of the valley is rife with edible goods that people walking along pathways are unlikely to notice.
Of course, the winery restaurants are also a going concern: Summerhill Pyramid Winery has a new organic food program with both to-stay and to-go meals, Jennifer Todd was recently named the new chef at Quail’s Gate, and Mission Hill’s Terrace Restaurant just reopened for the season. There is never a shortage of things to eat and drink in Kelowna – especially if you’re looking for something that captures the spirit and bounty of the valley.
