On Tuesday, a report evaluating how an independent panel of civil servants monitored the 2021 election said the federal government should explore lowering the threshold for when to notify Canadians about potential interference in election campaigns.Article content Rosenberg said the definitions the panel uses are “vague,” and leave the decision up to the judgment of civil servants.
Various media reports over the past few weeks have suggested that China engaged in a systematic campaign to influence both the 2021 and 2019 election, targeting candidates they wanted to see defeated and pushing for a Liberal minority to be returned to office. He recommended the government refine the current threshold, which allows the senior bureaucrats to make an announcement only when they judge that Canada’s ability to have a free and fair election has been compromised. He also suggested the government should give the panel more time to get ready for an election, more training and allow it to take broader inputs.
