China is the biggest economic danger to the UK of any country despite Russia’s war in Ukraine, Rishi Sunak claimed ahead of his first encounter with Xi Jinping
The Prime Minister insisted his view was shared by Western allies, saying: “If you look at the US national security strategy that was published just a couple of weeks ago, and if you look at how they describe their view of China and how to deal with it, I think you’ll find that it’s very similar to how I’ve just described it.”
He said the question of whether the UK should arm Taiwan to help the democratic island protect itself against invasion by China would be part of the foreign policy review. “We’re looking at all of these policies as part of our refresh of the integrated review,” he added. “Our policy on Taiwan is obviously there should be no unilateral change to the status and there should be a peaceful resolution to that situation. We stand ready to support Taiwan as we do in standing up to Chinese aggression.”
During the summer leadership election, Mr Sunak and Ms Truss competed to be the toughest on Beijing – a policy supported by most Conservative MPs, who worry that China is becoming more effective at projecting its anti-democratic values around the world. But some economists are concerned that if the West decouples from China, it could drastically slow economic growth as well as forcing smaller countries to choose between superpowers.
