Chinese researchers develops a cost-effective solid-state battery using a new electrolyte, reducing costs to under 10% of traditional models.

The new design, created by the University of Science and Technology of China , promises to perform at par with competing options for next-generation battery technology at a cost less than 10 percent of the original.

According to a national news outlet, this development brings China closer to its goal of leading the race to introduce what many see as the future of rechargeable battery technology. All solid-state batteries promise to solve traditional lithium-ion batteries’ capacity and safety drawbacks, with sulfide solid electrolytes playing a pivotal role in their development.

The cost of sulfide solid electrolytes typically exceeds $195 per kilogram, far above the $50 per kilogram threshold necessary for widespread adoption. According to experts, this cost challenge arises from the elaborate synthesis process of these electrolytes, which heavily relies on costly Li2S. Remarkably, LPSO retains the key benefits of the best-performing sulfide electrolytes, including compatibility with anodes that ensures performance stability. It pairs well with high-energy-density anodes such as lithium metal and silicon.
