Workers are leaving for higher-paying jobs after getting paid minimum wage—or close to it—for years
, but this issue is particularly disastrous when it comes to childcare because—though the pay and benefits for childcare employees certainly don’t reflect it—the industry forms the backbone of the U.S. economy. As theexplains, the shortages daycares and preschools are experiencing have forced them to turn children away, leaving parents with few, if any, alternatives—and therefore few, if any, ways of returning to work.
But the situation has long been untenable for childcare workers, many of whom reached a breaking point over the last year and a half. One childcare worker, Tanzie Roberts—quit in June after she received a raise of just 15 cents an hour during the pandemic.. “I can’t afford to live on my own and work the child-care jobs that I am qualified for.”
