Chicago Public Schools parents seek post-Labor Day start and 'traditional summer break' after 'chaos and conflict' of COVID-19.
Some parents, however, say a return to a post-Labor Day start would help kids relieve some of the stresses of the protracted COVID-19 pandemic.
“The chaos and conflict of the past year, much of which was pandemic induced, means that our kids need the traditional summer break,” the group said on athat was started Thursday and had gained just a few dozen signatures by Thursday evening. “Claims that kids need ‘make-up time’ as a response to the pandemic instability may come from good intentions, but just don’t make sense,” the petition states. “There is no evidence that simply adding days changes potential ‘learning loss,’ and an earlier school start will further weaken the already ailing tourism and hospitality industries.
