A Chicago City Council meeting became tense as multiple aldermen complained about a lack of clarity and direction in handling the ongoing illegal migrant crisis.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot speaks during election night rally at Mid-America Carpenters Regional Council on Feb. 28, 2023, in Chicago. Lightfoot lost her bid for a second term, trailing former public schools executive Paul Vallas and Brandon Johnson, a county board commissioner, both of whom advance to a runoff election on April 4.

Lightfoot addressed Taylor's criticisms in a statement, claiming the alderwoman's assertions were misguided. Chicago 20th Ward Alderwoman Jeannette Taylor criticized Mayor Lori Lightfoot over her handling of the influx of migrants during a city council meeting Wednesday, March 15, 2023. "Who is making these decisions, not talking to anybody, and then they say, ‘oh we're sorry.’ You're not sorry, because you've been doing it for more than six months. So that's why I oppose this," 5th Ward Alderman Leslie Hairston said.City council members have complained that their legislative body does not operate as a co-equal branch of the city government.
