Northbrook, known as an ice sports town which has produced Olympic athletes and medal winners, is home to the Chicago Curling Club now getting attention with February’s timing of the Olympic Winter Games. From the Pioneer Press.
“The Olympics are a big thing for us,” said 15-year member and club historian Jim Klann of Arlington Heights. “It gets us attention that we don’t get any other part of a four year cycle.The Chicago Curling Club was established nearly 75 years ago and is one of four curling ice facilities in the Chicago area. Exmoor Country Club in Highland Park is among locations.There are more than one million curlers worldwide, Kailey Meyer of Des Plaines, Chicago Curling Club spokesperson and member, said.
“I think it’s fabulous because it highlights curling,” said club member Ellen Dickson of Glenview. “What always surprises me is that people watch it on the TV and they think, ‘Oh, I’ll go out and I’ll try that. That looks so easy.’ “And then the whole idea that you have to have the ability to take a 40 pound plus piece of granite and be able to decide what kind of force you need to put behind it to get it down the ice,” Dickson said. “It’s really very fun and it’s challenging but almost anybody can start it, and continue it for many, many years.”
