In the hours after a fire in Albany Park damaged a bar, gym and apartments, the Chicago beer community rallied behind the brewery, quickly raising more than $46,000 through a GoFundMe campaign.
A man was in serious condition after an extra-alarm blaze consumed portions of an apartment building, a brewery and a “ninja” obstacle course gym on Chicago’s North Side early Monday, fire officials said.
The large fire, reported before 4 a.m., burned for several hours but was extinguished by early afternoon, said Curtis Hudson, a spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department. The blaze required about 150 firefighters and 50 firefighting vehicles, which were called to the 4300 block of North Richmond Street in Albany Park, Hudson said. Some were still on the scene about 1 p.m., monitoring possible ongoing hot spots, he said.A man, estimated to be about 60 years old, was taken to Swedish Hospital in serious condition for smoke inhalation, officials said. No other injuries were reported.
The fire started in an apartment building of six to nine units before spreading to a commercial building containing multiple businesses, the spokesman said. The latter building housed a brewery, Twisted Hippo, and an obstacle course gym called Ultimate Ninjas.
