'Cheer' brings the heat for Season 2. See what's ahead for the Navarro College cheer squad.

Wednesday, “and that’s what I did.” No lies here: The first season, a pop-cultural explosion in January 2020, ended with the steely-eyed Aldama leading her team of elite athletes to her 14th national championship title. Long-term domination, however, does not a gripping docu-series make. I wondered how the Netflix phenomenon would raise the stakes in its sophomore season.

now splits its time between both squads, introducing us to Aldama’s counterpart, TVCC coach Vontae Johnson, who may be equally competitive. A former collegiate and Team USA cheerleader, he’s hands-on to the point of jumping in on lifts, elevating a sprightly stunter— who is balancing on one foot—in the palm of his outstretched hand.

The TVCC Cardinals bring a brash, underdog energy that goes right down to their chant: “Here’s to you/ Here’s to me/ National Champs, we’re soon to be/ and if the judges disagree/ Fuck them, here’s to we.” Still, it’s hard to outdo Aldama’s reality-drama bonafides: her resting bitch face and cool monotone remain exquisite.

Navarro’s fame looms over Season 2; as does infamy. Episode 5, titled “Jerry,” tackles the downfall of Jerry Harris, formerly the show’s brightest star, known for his high-pitched, hyper-enthusiastic “mat talk.” In August 2020, Harris was arrested on federal child pornography charges ; that same month, two of Harris’s teenage victims sued him, along with the U.S. All Star Federation cheerleading organization and the Cheer Athletics gym where Harris cheered, for sexual misconduct.

Who wins at Daytona—Navarro or TVCC—is a freely Google-able fact, but I’m too invested in the drama ofnot to see Season 2 through. Like in its debut season, the show presents cheerleading as a rigorous athletic sport and, for many of its squad members, even a source of salvation. “There’s something that you’re working for that maybe nobody thinks is that big a deal, but that’s where you can go and get away from life, the problems, for a little bit,” Aladama says.
