The Motor City's pro football team—and the league’s newest darlings—draws on iconic Fords for a retro-flavored look.There aren’t cars on the new uniforms of the Detroit Lions, the NFL team from the Motor City, but there are carsand Mustang, as inspirations for their new look, which draws on the 1990s-era uniform worn by team legends such as Barry Sanders, Herman Moore, and Chris Spielman.
According to Lions senior vice president of marketing and brand Emily Griffin, the new unis’ specific ties to Ford go back a couple of years to when the team, eager to dive back to its most recent era of success, started to work with Nike on a fresh look. Griffin told us the Lions expressed a desire for a modernized take on a classic style, and Nike’s first move was to compile an inspiration board that drew from that brief.
A more direct line is drawn between the sleeves and the Ford Mustang, as the stripes on the uniform are pulled from the hood stripes seen on various Ford Mustang models. The Dark Horse on stage drove home this point with its stripes, and it also had a Lions windshield banner and fender graphics—we’re thinking Ford could make some coin selling similar special Lions editions of the Mustang and F-150 in Detroit.
It should strike while the iron’s hot, though. Last season, the traditionally woeful Lions won a playoff game and reached the NFC championship game for the first time since 1991, and excitement surrounding the team is at an all-time high. Long-suffering Lions fans—of which I am one—are definitely enjoying the buzz while it lasts.
