While fans went crazy when Daredevil showed up on screen in SpiderManNoWayHome, Charlie Cox was initially concerned his cameo would be underwhelming.
Daredevil actor Charlie Cox was nervous that his recent cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home would be lackluster. Cox starred as the titular character in the Netflix series Daredevil, running from 2015 to 2018. Daredevil, along with the several other connected Marvel TV shows developed by the streaming platform, were abruptly canceled by Netflix, blindsiding both fans and Marvel TV. Since then, the characters have sat untouched due to original contract agreements forbidding Marvel from using them.
Daredevil's Netflix contract was void as of late 2020, allowing for his revival. The character was featured as one of the many appearances kept secret for Spider-Man: No Way Home in December 2021. No Way Home picks up where Far From Home left off, when Peter Parker's identity is revealed after Mysterio falsely accuses Spider-Man of several crimes. Fans were ecstatic to find out that Peter had gone to Matt Murdock for legal advice.
Jon [Watts] said, ‘I have built in this moment where we reveal you, and no one speaks for a few beats because the audience will have a big reaction. I was a bit embarrassed, like, ‘Are you sure?’ I was going with the flow, but thinking, ‘I hope it’s not a letdown.’ But I got a lot of texts from friends who were at the premiere or saw it opening weekend, who told me there was a cool vocal reaction when that scene came on. It’s a strange feeling, but I am so grateful.
Since Daredevil's cancellation, fans have been vehemently petitioning for its return, so it comes as no surprise that they were overjoyed with this surprise appearance. Featuring in No Way Home has led many new viewers to Netflix to watch Daredevil, sending Marvel viewers who are playing catch up directly to their competitor's streaming platform.
With his No Way Home appearance and the removal of these shows from Netflix, it appears that Marvel has something more in store for the character. Cox seems to think the same, reassuring fans that he's optimistic that he will return to the MCU. Regardless of whether Spider-Man: No Way Home was a one-off appearance or not, fans have made it clear that they would fully support Daredevil's return, and Cox can rest easy knowing that his cameo was definitely not a let-down. .
