‘I really like this week,’ coach Brandon Staley says of the extra time after the end of training camp. ‘I think it’s really smart by the NFL.’
COSTA MESA — Training camp and three exhibitions faded in their rearview mirror, cutdown day came and went, players were signed to the practice squad and one was signed to add depth and experience to an important position, and the season-opening game was still some days away.
“I think that it gives the guys a chance to breathe a little bit,” Chargers coach Brandon Staley said. “You can’t minimize what these guys just went through with training camp and three preseason games. I think it allows you to get healthy. I think it allows you to focus on fundamentals and it allows you to maybe test some things schematically. Then you get into game week, and you know that you’re headed somewhere. I really like this week. I think it’s really smart by the NFL.
“Once Sunday, Monday rolls around, and we get that extra day, we’ll put all of our attention to the Raiders,” Chargers defensive coordinator Renaldo Hill said. “We can’t look forward to K.C. because the Raiders are a good opponent. They are a new team with a new coach, so we have to be focused on all of those things to get us prepared so we can start the season off right.”Running back Sony Michel’s one-year contract with the Chargers carries a $1.
Staley said Michel’s name was mentioned in the days leading up to the draft as a free agent the Chargers might pursue in the offseason. The decision was then made to draft Isaiah Spiller in the fourth round from Texas A&M as a way to bolster the Chargers’ running backs corps.
