SAN ANTONIO — Here’s how Boerne Champion coach Alberto Escalante summed up his school’s first foray into water polo:Although the Chargers fell one step short of a state title after a 19-10 loss against Brazoswood in the UIL’s inaugural boys water polo state championship game, that didn’t dampen Escalante’s appreciation for the efforts his team showed.
Brazoswood senior Anthony Sury was selected as the MVP of the boys title game after recording six goals and one assist Saturday night at Josh Davis Natatorium.It was a historic season for many reasons. Not only was water polo in its inaugural UIL season, but Boerne ISD also offered it as a school sport for the first time.
“He was OK with being the guy who carried the team,” Escalante said. “He wanted to put the team on his shoulders. He’s a great young man with a lot of heart.” Champion led 7-3 at the 1:29 mark of the third period when Foster goalkeeper Christian Saravia was issued a red card and ejected from the game.
