Though many Americans are still staying at home, the rebound in public movement is palpable.

Americans are slowly starting to leave their homes after quickly complying with social distancing and stay-at-home orders. As many governors begin toshows that movement fell 15 percentage points from the start of March to the end of the month. The share of mobile users leaving home nationwide crept up 5 percentage points from April 11 to May 11.

The percentage of devices leaving home on May 11 was about as high as it was during the end of March. Put another way, American mobility is almost halfway back to where it was in February. As of May 11, all 10 states with the lowest rates of leaving home were on the West and East Coasts. The combined area of southern states from Texas to Delaware left home at higher rates before any states issued stay-at-home orders, and it has been more mobile as restrictions are lifted.

USA TODAY used the data to measure the share of users in each state who left home on a typical day. To account for variations by day of the week, the analysis used seven-day averages.
