Dion then disclosed that she’d been diagnosed with a “a very rare neurological disorder called the stiff person syndrome which affects 1 in a million people.” Stiff Person Syndrome is a “rare acquired neurological disorder characterized by progressive muscle stiffness and repeated episodes of painful muscle spasms,”If left untreated, SPS symptoms can progress to the point that it significantly impairs the sufferer’s ability to walk and perform routine, daily tasks.
“While we’re still learning about this rare condition, we now know this is what’s been causing all the spasms I’ve been having,” the singer explained. “Unfortunately, these spasms affect every aspect of my daily life, sometimes causing difficulties when I walk and not allowing me to use my vocal cords to sing the way I’m used to.”
