The Orionid meteor shower peaks Saturday, Oct. 21 through Sunday but, will last until Nov. 22!
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — You don’t need a telescope to view an interesting astronomical event this weekend on the First Coast. The event, the Orionid meteor shower, peaks on Oct. 21 and Oct. 22 but, will last through Nov. 22.
At it’s peak in prime conditions, you may see up to 20 meteors per hour with a few bright fireballs mixed in there as well. This meteor shower we observe comes from tail debris of the famous Halley's Comet which passes the Earth every 76 years. But, every year the Earth plows through that leftover debris, creating our meteor shower.
Do remember to get away from light pollution in a dark area with the peak viewing time being from midnight to sunrise. This is because the Earth will be turning into that debris field and like bugs on a windshield, we will get smacked with a slew of dust particles, creating the meteor shower.Check out the moon with the pros with these weekend events on the First Coast
