The list of those who have backed Gary Lineker after the BBC told him to step back from Match of the Day has continued to grow, spawning a ImwithGary movement

Announcing the decision on Friday, BBC spokesperson said the broadcaster had been “in extensive discussions with Gary and his team in recent days. We have said that we consider his recent social media activity to be a breach of our guidelines”.

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon described the BBC’s decision to take Lineker off air as “indefensible”. She added: “It is undermining free speech in the face of political pressure – & it does always seem to be rightwing pressure it caves to”. “What a dreadful generation of wet, weak, snowflakes this shower are”, he wrote on Twitter, “An embarrassment to 300 years of parliamentary debate.His dark Materials author Philip Pullman said his admiration for Lineker and fellow presetners Ian Wright and Alan Shearer was “unbounded” in the wake of the BBC decision.
