Ross grew up in the Cherokee Nation capital of Tahlequah, Okla., where she earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1928 at Northeastern State University, then. She earned a master’s from the University of Northern Colorado 10 years later.
At a time when few women were pursuing careers in the sciences, Ross’ example encouraged Native American youth to study engineering. Her example continues to speak to us today.
