'Sadly, these 'witchy' stereotypes do damage modern-day witchcraft; painting the practice as either evil or undeserving of respect,' Anderson shares.
Anderson explains that, although broomsticks served various magical purposes, their main use was for clearing away negative energy ahead of a ritual."A witch would walk in a clockwise circle around his or her designated area, swinging the broom back and forth as he or she goes," she says.
Outside of their everyday magical applications, broomsticks were also linked to the gross misconception that, thanks to their deal with the Devil, witches could fly."In the middle ages, witches would create hallucinogenic balms or salves known as 'flying ointments' to encourage altered states of awareness," Anderson says.
Of course, as word got around that witches could"fly," so to speak, their prosecutors used this myth to suggest that witches were dealing with dark forces — and punished them accordingly.
