Though St. Patrick's Day is on a Friday during Lent, New Jersey’s Catholic dioceses say it’s OK to eat a traditional corned beef dinner.

The reprieve is specifically for St. Patrick’s Day, which is on Friday, March 17, one of Lent’s days of abstinence this year. The rest of New Jersey’s Diocese have made similar announcements — giving Catholics throughout the state permission to celebrate the feast of St. Patrick with a traditional corned beef meal.

“For those members of the faithful celebrating this Solemnity and who desire it, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin has dispensed the penitential obligation to abstain from meat on Friday, March 17,” the. “A substitution should be made in the form of fasting, prayer and/ or almsgiving.”
