Ramon Laureano homers twice, but kid pitcher gets roughed up in 8-6 loss
A catastrophic June came to end for the Oakland A’s with an 8-6 loss on the road to the Seattle Mariners on Thursday night.Adrian Martinez, who was called up from Triple-A Las Vegas to pitch the game, gave up seven earned runs – four of them in the fifth inning – in 4 ⅔ innings. Martinez was one of the players acquired in the April 3 trade that sent Sean Manaea to the San Diego Padres.
Martinez gave up a run in the first inning, but Elvis Andrus tied the game up in the third inning with a solo homer to left field. Ramon Laureano tied the game in the following inning with a three-run opposite-field home run. It was a short-lived tie, as Seattle scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
“He threw strikes and he was one pitch away from getting out of that fifth inning,” A’s manager Mark Kotsay said to reporters in Seattle. “I think it’s a different night if we execute with two strikes. Overall, I like the way he competes and the way he works, he works quick.”
