Carlsbad's Viasat to launch satellite that will compete against Starlink in April
Carlsbad’s Viasat on Tuesday set a date for the long-delayed launch of its first terabit-class Internet satellite, which is now slated to blast into orbit from Cape Canaveral on April 8.
Viasat-3 is a constellation of three satellites, each of which has a terabit of capacity — or 1,000 gigabits. The constellation will boost Viasat’s total capacity by roughly 600 percent. “Viasat-3 will enable us to serve areas that are currently full — with updated plans with higher speeds, more bandwidth and greater value,” said Dankberg.
While Viasat has lost residential subscribers, it has held its own providing in-flight Wi-Fi for several commercial airlines, including Delta, American, United, JetBlue and new Southwest Airlines planes. It also provides connectivity to Air Force One.
