Un-ranked Lancers softball team beats Granite Hills and Bonita Vista on Saturday to capture the Falcon Fiesta Tournament at Torrey Pines
With the postseason looming in the near future, the discussion turns to who is the best softball team in San Diego County.How about Del Norte or Otay Ranch or Cathedral Catholic or San Marcos?With a modest five-game winning streak, the unranked Lancers threw their hat into the ring after a pair of wins Saturday in the semifinals and championship game of the 24th annual Falcon Fiesta Tournament at Torrey Pines High.
“I think we are the best-kept secret in the county,” said senior catcher Emma Tolley, who said she stands 6-foot-1 in cleats. “We got no recognition in the rankings before the season started.”Behind the complete pitching of Abby Huhn in the semifinals — a 9-0 win over Granite Hills in a game stopped by the mercy rule after five innings — and Paige Wilson in the finals, an 8-2 win over Bonita Vista, Carlsbad outscored both opponents 17-2.
Tolley smacked a three-run home run and a two-run single against Granite Hills to push the Lancers to the finals.Tolley was named the tournament’s MVP. “We have pitching, we have hitting and we have the fire for this run,” said the UC Riverside-bound backstop. “We want to win a league title and win the Open Division to show everyone we belong.Carlsbad, now 13-4, scored single runs in the first and second innings before erupting for three runs in the third for a 5-0 lead.The Lancers added a run in the fourth inning and Tolley launched a two-run homer in the fifth inning for an 8-1 lead.
Bonita Vista got a home run from Alisa Wilson when her long fly ball hit a defender’s glove and fell over the fence in the third inning.
