“Who says sustainability can’t be sexy?” Stella McCartney said of her next-gen sequin jumpsuit creation.

, the formfitting piece deserves a closer look. It’s only appropriate that McCartney, a pioneer of sustainable fashion, would find a more eco-friendly alternative to regular old sequins. Enter: Radiant Matter, a material-innovation company finding new ways to shine.

“We’re inspired by the way that nature creates sparkle: A lot of what we do is look at peacock feathers and beetles’ wings and butterflies,” says Elissa Brunato, the founder of“They have this beautiful iridescence. There are no metal coatings on their wings. We look at the way nature does it.” Brunato explains that the majority of sequins currently on the market are either made with PVC or PET, which are both plastics. “They’re petroleum based and have dyes and chemicals and added metals to create the sparkle,” she says. “We’re creating a sequin that’s a much more simplified material and can have this natural sparkle.” Instead, Radiant Matter uses cellulose derived from wood to create a natural iridescence without the use of dyes, petroleum, or metals.

For Stella McCartney, it was love at first sight. She crafted the jumpsuit for Delevingne on a cotton base then added the Radiant Matter sequins to give it an additional dazzle. “I am amazed by the iridescent beauty of our BioSequins all-in-one—handcrafted in my London atelier from plant-based, nontoxic sequins that are even more stunning than conventional options,” McCartney says.

Brunato points out that fashion’s love affair with a little shimmer goes far beyond sequins—and that with Radiant Matter’s first product as a starting point, the possibilities are endless. “When you look at the sparkle that’s currently in the industry now, that comes in all different forms—in plastic beads, twisted into fibers,” she says. “We hope to be able to address all of that and create a new benchmark for sparkle.
