Research scientist hopeful stock will recover

“I think it's positive that the acoustic biomass is likely to be similar to what we saw in 2022, but I will note it is still in the critical zone, so overall …based on this new LRP, the capelin are in the critical zone,” DFO research scientist Hannah Murphy said during a capelin stock assessment update with reporters on Wednesday.
While there’s a big difference between 262 kt and 640 kt, Murphy said capelin appeared to be doing quite well in 2022: they were longer and heavier, and they had a lot of food.Capelin stocks were above 640 kt in 2013 and 2014.“So, we need to get the capelin stock out of this critical zone, not only for capelin, but for the whole finfish ecosystem.”
