CBRM to explore the feasibility

IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POST - IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POSTSYDNEY, N.S. — Plans for a Cape Breton University medical campus sparked an idea from one municipal councillor to see whether the Cape Breton Regional Municipality could set up a scholarship program as an incentive for local students to attend.
As he told council during its meeting Tuesday at city hall, Edwards sought a potential opportunity to, in his words, “grow our own doctors.” In other words, he would like to see municipal staff come up with an issue paper to “explore the feasibility of the CBRM establishing a scholarship program to support one local student per year to attend the recently announced CBU medical school.
Earlier this month, Premier Tim Houston announced $58.9 million to develop the new campus which, once it’s slated to be up and operational by the fall of 2025, plans to train 30 new doctors each year in collaboration with Dalhousie University’s faculty of medicine. He also highlighted the rising number of people who remain without a family doctor — more than 137,500 provincewide, 12,287 within the CBRM alone, according to Nova Scotia Health data from early March — and brought up the tragedy of a Port Morien woman’s mother-in-law who died Dec. 30 shortly after spending several hours awaiting care at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital’s emergency department.CBRM Coun.
