Just wrapping up his 25th year running routes “all over the island," he’s the longest-tenured of the 21 staff at the facility. His 25th anniversary at the job aligned withThe company’s leaders spent the week visiting its plants and warehouses — including in Sydney on Sept. 21, where they were among the first to greet Ongo after another day on the job.
The Sydney centre’s employees, visiting executives and other guests gathered in the warehouse’s sitting area for some presentations as part of the company’s “fifth birthday.” Among those giving thanks for the plant’s work were CEO Todd Parsons and Cape Breton Regional Municipality District 11 Coun. Darren O’Quinn.
The big sellers — Sprite, Dasani Water and Coca-Cola itself — tower in columns at the warehouse’s rear. Mark Ongo has trucked from Coca-Cola Canada Bottling's Sydney warehouse for 25 years. He's one of the 21 employees at the company's Cape Breton distribution centre in Edwardsville. That's where staff and executives gathered on Sept. 21 to celebrate the five-year anniversary of Coke Canada Bottling's purchase of Coca-Cola production in Canada.
Sydney got $1,500 of that funding last week. Employees chose to donate to the Youth Project, which provides sexual orientation and gender identity-related support to Nova Scotians 25 years old and younger. “Personal relations and integrity mean a lot. It’s not something where you interact with somebody today and you don’t tomorrow,” he said. “Once you establish a relationship in this business … it’s about the long-term.”
