Kuzmenko arrived with skill, swagger, preference for toe\u002Ddrags and long shifts. He would be scratched, benched, learn and deliver.
When the Canucks confirmed in July that patient trolling became a one-year, $950,000 US commitment to Kuzmenko, and complete with incentives, it was a win-win.
All that promise was rewarded with a palatable two-year contract extension in January, and it proved a wise investment. Kuzmenko was applauded for adhering to directives. “He wasn’t good tonight, he was spinning everywhere,” stressed Tocchet. “You’ve got to make sure you get the puck in deep, or that you’re in good position. You can’t be bad in every area, and we had five guys who just weren’t good.”
Kuzmenko would then score five goals in a four-game span. And that’s the thing about the gregarious and sometimes wayward winger: He wants feedback. He wants more video and on-ice instruction. He wants to be better. You can’t knock that.Kuzmenko was often a special-teams option, but still led the Canucks with 14 power-play goals despite ranking fourth in PP1 and PP2 ice time with 243 minutes, 40 seconds.
