Before The Book of Boba Fett, James Mangold was in line to direct a Boba Fett movie that would have been R-rated had Disney allowed it.
One of Disney's canceled Star Wars anthology movies would have been a Boba Fett movie, which director James Mangold has confirmed would have been the franchise's first R-rated film should Disney have allowed for that. Mangold is no stranger to Lucasfilm despite not working on the Boba Fett movie that was planned in the same vein as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Solo: A Star Wars Story.
"Well at the point I was doing it... I was probably making much more of a borderline rated-R... single-planet Spaghetti Western... the world would never be able to embrace Baby Yoda if I had made that, because it didn't really belong in the world I was envisioning."
