Canadian public opinion has long been more hardline on criminal justice than is reflected by government policy
. It’s not unusual, for instance, for opinion polls to find majority support for capital punishment, which was officially abolished by Canada in the 1970s.
This included the random fatal stabbing of a mother and child outside an Edmonton elementary school in broad daylight on May 5. The 33-year-old assailant — who was later shot by police — was on parole at the time for a similar random attack against a 12-year-old boy.Article content More than two thirds of poll respondents described Canadian bail policies as being a system of “catch and release.” Notably, this sentiment was shared equally among white and non-white respondents.
