Critics wonder if people know the difference between medical doctors and naturopathic doctors as a Canadian town funds a naturopathic clinic to alleviate their doctor shortage.
"If this is really to address a physician shortage, then it is just completely inappropriate and completely ridiculous," said Michelle Cohen, an Ontario family physician.
"We have a medical recruitment program, and we are trying to attract more doctors," said city council member Glen Grant. Former naturopath Britt Hermes said the training naturopaths receive is far different than the kind students in medical school receive. "Naturopathic medicine recognizes an inherent self-healing process in people that is ordered and intelligent," says"Naturopathic physicians treat each patient by taking into account individual physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, social, and other factors," the statement continues."Since total health also includes spiritual health, naturopathic physicians encourage individuals to pursue their personal spiritual development.
