Richmond, B.C. race walker tackles disappointment with humour and reflection
That’s a healthy perspective gained well after the initial fourth-place finish in the 20km race walk, and it was not immediately evident when he crossed the line in the 35km, having torn his hamstring three kilometres earlier. The pain of the injury and the frustration of another oh-so-close finish were writ large on his face.
“The two results on paper are the same, fourth and fourth, but they’re so different as well,” he said. “The 20km, I was ecstatic. I’ve taken a decade to figure out that event … So it was a huge, huge relief. It also meant I got to keep my funding, which is really important. My carding money is one of the things I rely heavily on and if I didn’t finish top-eight there I was looking pretty hooped for that going forward.
The logical next step in his mind was on the podium in the 35km — because he prefers the longer distances — and in fact he set his sights on the top step.“That’s what I had dreamed of as a kid, winning a race against the best in the world,” he said.“Apparently it’s quite bad. Recovery looks like it’s going to be in the months, not weeks,” he said. “I’m proud to know I pushed through that tremendous amount of pain and got to that finish line.
He set a national record in the 20km and contributed 10 points to Canada’s record total of 70 at a world athletics championships. He also became the only race walker in history, male or female, to record three fourth-place finishes at worlds and Olympics.Article content He did it first at the 2016 Rio Olympics — and in odd fashion. He crossed the line fourth, but only after being bumped by a Japanese competitor. Athletics Canada filed an appeal and won, giving Dunfee the bronze, which he lost when the Japanese federation appealed that decision.“I will sleep soundly tonight, and for the rest of my life, knowing I made the right decision,” he said in a statement at the time.
