Canada will help train Ukrainian soldiers in Latvia as war drags on

Defence Minister Anita Anand announced Tuesday that Canadian military members and their Latvian counterparts will begin trainingThat means Canada is adding a third country to its training efforts under Operation Unifier, which is already active in Poland and the United Kingdom."It is also a recognition that our world is growing increasingly dark, and that a year-and-a-half into the further illegal and unjustifiable invasion of Ukraine by Vladimir Putin, we cannot let up," Anand said.

Mūrniece said there is a sense of urgency in the Baltic region to maintain support for Ukraine 18 months into the Russian invasion.Latvia's military assistance to Ukraine now accounts for one per cent of the country's GDP, Mūrniece said, part of an overall push to boost its readiness. The federal government has refused to confirm or deny that report, saying only that Canada remains committed to NATO and investing in the military.Anand and Mūrniece travelled to Canadian Forces Base Petawawa on Tuesday. Their meetings focused on the plan to surge a Canadian-led NATO battle group in Latvia to a combat-ready brigade.

Canada has already announced that it is urgently procuring anti-tank, anti-drone and anti-air defence systems.
