While Canada’s promised Safe Long-Term Care Act remains an enigma — in its content and completion date — the federal health minister said it will be shaped in part by the opinions of 19,000 Canadians whose insights were used in the creation ofHealth Minister Jean-Yves Duclos did not give specific details on how those comments would inform legislation, but suggested they will be part of the ongoing consultation around the promised federal act.
There are two “complementary” standards, one for quality of life, the other for building operations. They recommend better working conditions for staff and new designs for smaller spaces in homes, replacing traditional institutional settings with a more normal approach to life. Research shows that smaller households, for example, lessen transmission of infections.
The federal government has promised to spend $3 billion to help provinces ensure that homes meet the standards along with $1.7 billion to bring the wages of personal support workers up to $25 an hour. Sinha was chair of the Health Standards Organization committee that created the standards on quality of life and work in homes. The CSA Group standards committee, led by AgeWell CEO Alex Mihailidis, is focused on design and infection prevention and control, with a resident-first philosophy.
