Every federal government over the past 30 years has been “infiltrated” by agents acting on behalf of China, and each one has chosen to ignore warnings about it, a former CSIS official told lawmakers in Ottawa on Friday morning.
Not only has the current Liberal government been “compromised,” but all political parties have been at one point or another, according to Michel Juneau-Katsuya, who served as the Canadian Security Intelligence Service’s Asia-Pacific bureau chief.
Earlier this month, Don Valley North MP Han Dong quit the Liberal caucus following a Global report that alleged he had secretly advised a Chinese diplomat in 2021 that Beijing should delay the release of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, two Canadians who were jailed in China after a Chinese telecom executive was arrested in Canada at the request of the United States. The Star has not independently verified the allegations.
, Chiu believes he became a victim of a Chinese misinformation campaign on apps like WeChat and WhatsApp. “I’m glad that we’re having this national conversation on foreign interference,” Wilczynski said. “What is regrettable is how we got here and how this conversation is unfolding.”
