Canada makes final cuts ahead of Friday\u0027s basketball World Cup opener
The senior men’s team braintrust kept reigning NCAA player of the year Zach Edey, and cut veterans Thomas Scrubb, the former Carleton star and guard Kenny Chery, who has carved out a fine career in Europe and has played for Canada since 2008.“With this team, we’ve assembled a group of players which we believe can compete with any team in the world,” head coach Jordi Fernandez said in a release.

Canada is in Group H and will face France, Lebanon and Latvia in the Group Phase. The top two teams in each group advance. Canada went 3-2 in exhibition games in Germany and Spain, including a win over Germany and over world No. 1 Spain. Canada has never finished higher than sixth at this tournament, but can advance to its first Olympics since 2000 by finishing in the top two amongst teams from the Americas.
