Breaking: Canada is expelling a Chinese diplomat after foreign interference allegations
OTTAWA—Canada is expelling a Chinese diplomat accused of gathering intelligence on a Conservative MP’s family.“Canada has decided to declare persona non grata Mr. Zhao Wei,” she said in a statement.
The move comes a week after the Globe and Mail first reported that Wei was gathering information on Chong’s relatives “for future potential sanctions,” and that was “almost certainly meant to make an example of this MP and deter others from taking anti-PRC positions.” She warned, however, that the potential risks to Canada’s own security needed to be considered in light of the 2018 arrest of two Canadian men in China during a different diplomatic dispute.
