A look at the expanded Canada\u002DU.S. Safe Third Country agreement and what it means for illegal border crossers.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Biden were set to discuss the agreement in a more official manner on Friday, and an announcement is expected to follow shortly after. But as one official from Trudeau’s office noted, “nothing is done until it’s done”.
Canada and the United States have been actively trying to find common ground in this situation for years, and more actively in the past months. According to a final rule set to be published in the U.S. Federal Register, the revised agreement will apply to anyone who “make an asylum or other protection claim” in either country within 14 days of crossing the border.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and U.S. President Joe Biden will discuss the issue during a meeting in Ottawa on Friday. The announcement will likely come afterward although some details are being worked out.Article content
