A star from The White Lotus season 2 reveals the major horror movie role that she turned down, which turned the actor who took it into a huge star.
One of the breakout stars of The White Lotus season 2 revealed that she had the chance to read for the lead role in Midsommar but turned it down. Midsommar was the sophomore feature by Ari Aster, who burst onto the scene with the challenging and well-regarded Hereditary in 2018. The film starred Florence Pugh as a young woman who accompanied her boyfriend and his friends on a trip to a secluded Swedish community that turns out to be a threatening cult with dangerous designs on their group.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT This week, Haley Lu Richardson sat down for an interview with the Backstage podcast In the Envelope to discuss her role as Tanya's assistant Portia as part of the White Lotus season 2 cast. During the conversation she discussed roles that got away, revealing that she was invited to read for the role in Midsommar.
There are a lot [of roles] that got away. But I did get the script for Midsommar. I remember reading it; it was such a well-written, creepy script. I actually still haven’t seen the movie because I kind of can’t bring myself to watch it.They wanted to meet me. I had actually done Split, I think, a year or two before. And I was like, "I don’t want to do another disturbing movie right now." I just don’t have it in me, going around and crying at these disturbing things.
Would Midsommar Have Done for Haley Lu Richardson What It Did for Florence Pugh? Florence Pugh is a huge star now, including a major role in the current era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Black Widow's younger sister Yelena. However, Midsommar was one of the films that skyrocketed her into the A-list. The hype around her explosive performance in the horror film likely also led to her eventual Oscar nomination for an Oscar for her role in that same year's Little Women.
It was completely fair for Richardson to turn down the script, considering the intense situations Pugh's character wound up dealing with. From the first frame of the film, where her family dies horribly and leaves her with inexpressible grief, Pugh is forced to contend with some very dire situations. Things only get worse when the group arrives at the cult, where they witness a ritual death by cliff-jumping and matters escalate from there.
